Our Life Company Ratings

The two life companies that issue our variable annuities to help Americans invest for retirement and plan for guaranteed income are highly rated by independent ratings agencies for financial strength and claims-paying ability.

Financial strength is important—you want the company that stands behind the insurance guarantees in a variable annuity to be there when you need it—when you’re ready to take income or when your heirs need the funds that are due to them.

The current ratings for American General Life Insurance Company and The United States Life Insurance Company in the City of New York as of February 14, 2013 are:

Standard & Poor’s

A+ (Strong)

“An insurer rated ‘A’ has STRONG financial security characteristics, differing only slightly from those rated higher.”

Moody’s Investors Service

A2 (Good)

“Insurance companies rated A offer good financial security.  However, elements may be present which suggest a susceptibility to impairment sometime in the future.

A.M. Best Company

A (Excellent)

“Assigned to companies that have, in our opinion, an excellent ability to meet their ongoing insurance obligations.”

Fitch Ratings

A+ (Strong)

”Denotes a low expectation of ceased or interrupted payments. Indicates strong capacity to meet policyholder and contract obligations. This capacity may, nonetheless, be more vulnerable to changes in circumstances or in economic conditions than is the case for higher ratings.”

Ratings do not reflect and are not indicative of the variable portfolio’s performance. Only the variable annuity’s fixed account rates, protection features, and income payments are backed by the claims-paying ability of the issuer. Ratings can be objective indicators of a company’s financial strength and can provide a relative measure to help investors select the best insurer for their needs. Ratings are subject to change at any time and are not a guarantee of the future financial strength and/or claims-paying ability of the company.

Our life companies have a long history of providing retirement solutions to individual investors. As always, these life companies stand behind the guarantees in our products.
